The Principal of the Tamale Polytechnic, Dr. Seidu Yakubu Peligah, has decried the mass exodus of the polytechnic's staff to the universities and industries for jobs, after undergoing further training sponsored by the school.

He attributed the problem to poor remuneration and other conditions of service and appealed to the government to improve them.

Dr. Peligah made the appeal at the 12th Matriculation Ceremony of the Polytechnic in Tamale.

One thousand 442 students were admitted to pursue HND courses in Engineering, Accountancy, Marketing, Statistics, Building Technology, Secretaryship and Management Studies as well as Catering and Agriculture Engineering. According to the Principal, 2,046 applied for admission this academic year.

He said a pre-HND programme has been introduced as a bridging course for students who for one reason or the other, failed in one or two areas, which might have prevented them from gaining admission to the Polytechnic.

Dr. Peligah debunked the notion that the pre-HND programme automatically qualifies a candidate for admission into the HND.

He therefore called on the students to work hard to meet the polytechnic"s standard. Alhaji Peligah said that the Polytechnic is working around the clock to introduce new programmes, tailored towards addressing specific problems in its own environment.

The proposed programmes include textile and leather technology as well as ceramics and commercial art.

The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mohammed Amin Adam, said the contribution of the polytechnic to nation building cannot be over-emphasised. He disclosed plans by the assembly to develop the Tamale metropolis into what he termed a digital city, stressing that there are already a number Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) centres all over the metropolis.
