The first out of 31 model schools currently being constructed by the government was inaugurated at Elmina in the Central Region by President J.A. Kufuor.
Edinaman Secondary School in the Komenda -Edina –Eguafo- Abrem (KEEA) District was selected to benefit from the model school project being undertaken on a pilot basis, in each district.
The school has been provided with modern and standard facilities, including science and computer laboratories, staff bungalows, dormitories, classroom and library blocks, an assembly hall and external road networks, among others, it cost ¢22.3 billion.
The Model School Programme is the government’s policy of providing each district with a school that could be compared favourably with the leading schools in the country.
President Kufuor explained that the model schools are meant to reduce the wide disparity in quality education in second cycle schools and also ease the pressure on the few well-endowed schools.
He announced that the contract had been awarded for the second batch of 25 schools selected for upgrading and work would commence this year.
He emphasised the need for district assemblies, chiefs and Parent-Teacher Associations to take good care of the institutions, saying, "The facilities should be maintained for them to last and continue to attract qualified staff for many years."
The President announced that with effect from September this year, the government would launch the New Educational Reform Policy to produce quality teachers in requisite numbers for the country’s educational system.
He commended the management, teaching and non-teaching staff of the school, as well as all those who assisted in the upgrading of the school.
Papa Owusu Ankomah, the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, in an address, said the upgrading of the school demonstrated the governments commitment towards the development of the nation’s human resource base.
He urged the students to aspire for excellence in their academic pursuit to justify the investment made in the school.
The Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, expressed appreciation to the government in the execution of the project, and commended the chiefs and people of Elmina for releasing the land in the promotion of education in the town.
Central Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur, gave the assurance that the access road from the junction to the school would be tarred at a cost of ¢2.5billion, adding that the contract had already been awarded.
