PROPRIETORS of private schools have been urged to break new grounds by venturing into practical and functional education.

They must establish technical, vocational and agricultural schools in line with the Educational Reform Programme.

Mr John Kosi Hobenu, the Volta Regional Director of Education made the appeal when gave the key note address at the 18th Volta Regional Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) Week celebration at Hohoe.

The week long celebration is under the theme ‘50 years of Private Education in Ghana.’

Mr Hobenu asked that character training should be taken seriously since "academic excellence without a corresponding good moral conduct is meaningless and can make an individual a social deviant.

He said even though the government was ready to provide them with textbooks and other materials, it was constrained by inadequate funds.

Mr Michael Dordzie, the Regional GNAPS Chairman said they were there to support government in educating the ever growing population of children.

He said though the journey had not been easy they are happy that government was now assuring them.

He expressed his thanks to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for supplying them with textbooks.

Mr Dordzie wondered why pupils in the private schools were left out of the national mass deworming exercise.

"After all they are Ghanaian children whose parents pay taxes to government chest," he noted.

He asked proprietors to avoid unhealthy rivalry since they can only move forward if they worked in peace and harmony.

He called on those running their schools in dilapidated buildings to improve upon their facilities.
