The girl-child education campaign has increased female enrolment in schools in the Eastern Region. The eastern Regional Girl Education Co-coordinator, Mrs. Henrietta Anim, said though the campaign has succeeded in its objective, there is still the challenge of ensuring that the girls stay in school and climb higher in the educational ladder.

Mrs. Anim said teenage pregnancy is a major cause of early school drop out among girls.

She revealed that between January and November last year, 82 teenage girls in basic schools in New Juaben North got pregnant.

The Eastern Regional Girl Education Coordinator, appealed to both government and Non-governmental Organisations to tackle teenage pregnancy seriously before streetism, because according to her, early pregnancy among girls is the main cause of streetism.

Mrs. Anim said through social mobilization at the district level, the issue of ensuring that girls stay at school is being addressed. She added that Girl Child Education Co-ordinators have been appointed in basic schools in the Eastern Region to encourage girls in their academic studies.
