The Deputy Registrar and Controller of Examinations of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the Volta Region, Justice Ansa-Asare has advocated for compulsory elective mathematics examinations for Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) by the Ghana Education Service.

He explained that "alternating elective mathematics with other subjects places students at disadvantage during admission into tertiary institutions because those who have registered core Mathematics have advantage over those who have not registered elective mathematics."

Mr. Ansa-Asare was in responding to an answer during an open form with students from selected SSS in the Ho Municipality. It formed part of the 55th anniversary celebration of WAEC in the Volta region at the weekend.

He further explained that some tertiary institutions disqualify students who did not write elective mathematics at the West African Senior Secondary School Examination when admissions becomes keen and stressed on the need for GES to ensure that in future elective mathematics becomes compulsory.

Mr. Ansa-Asare urged school authorities to impress upon the GES to make the study of elective mathematics compulsory because it is an advantage to gain admission into tertiary institutions.

He cautioned students to take the continuous assessments serious since it was an advantage if they were indisposed to write external examinations.

Mr. Ansa-Asare advised students not to panic and cheat during examinations because they had been designed for them to pass and not to derive interest in remedial examinations.

"We need to kill the illness of examination leakages and malpractices by taking our studies serious" he said and warned "those who have made up their minds to cheat will have themselves to blame."
