Parliament on Wednesday passed the National Accreditation Board Bill into law after taking it through the third reading.
The Bill, yet to receive presidential assent to become operational, seeks to revise the legislation on the National Accreditation Board (NAB) to reflect the changing demands of tertiary education and provide quality assurance in the field.
A report of the parliamentary Committee on Education said tertiary education, particularly in the private sector, had expanded since the passage of an earlier law, which established the NAB in 1993. These expansions in the field, over time, has revealed certain operational weaknesses, which needs to be addressed, hence the introduction of this new bill.
The report touched on the need for the NAB to assist students make informed choices concerning programmes and institutions accredited to minimize the situation where students enrol into unaccredited institutions and programmes with their attendant problems.
