Fanteakwa District Director of Education, Ms. Mary Animwah has deplored the poor reading habit of students in the district.
She made the remarks at a four-day training workshop for Primary three teachers on the teaching of English language organized by Ghana Education Service (GES) and sponsored by EQUALL, a programme under an USAID project.
Ms. Animwah said the inability of students to read and comprehend what they were reading was the major cause of poor performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the district and expressed concern that five schools in the district obtained zero per cent at the 2007 BECE last year and urged all stakeholders to help reverse the situation this year.
She commended the EQUALL project for helping to develop education in the district.
The Assistant Director of the Human Resource Management Division (HRMD) of the Ghana Education Service(GES), Mr E.M.K Adde complained about the failure of most teachers to implement new knowledge and skills they acquire at workshops to the benefit of the students.
He urged teachers to live up to their professional duties to help develop education in the district.
