The Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education (MDE), Mr Joseph K. Onyinah has stated that pupils should not be expelled from school for non-payment of school levies.
That he stressed was an infringement on the fundamental human rights of the child.
Mr Onyinah who said this at a get-together and awards ceremony organized by the 4-Garrison Educational Complex, where hardworking and deserving teachers as well as some retired teachers were given awards for their dedicated service to the GES.
He noted that expelling the child from school for non-payment of special school levies was one of the ways through which the child was denied the right to education, and cautioned school authorities to desist from the practice.
Mr Onyinah pointed out that teaching required a lot of sacrifice and was not just a money-making venture.
Payment of printing fees, extra classes he noted were not supposed to be charged by teachers, adding that teachers should not in any way collect any money for marking pupils’ scripts.
He appealed to the teachers not to compromise their professional principles with money but try to make a change in education, since the future of the child laid in their hands.
The MDE also urged parents not to use the Capitation Grant as an excuse to refuse contributing to the development of their children’s education.
About 35 teachers received various awards in areas such as best subject teachers, teachers who scored 100% in various subjects, best teachers in primary division and best nursery attendants.
The overall best teacher was Mr Owusu Boachie of the Army Basic School.
Special awards were also given to six retired teachers.
