The Inspectorate Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES), is being strengthened to make it a reliable quality control unit, Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, Director General, has announced.
To this end, the Director General said more logistics and qualified personnel would be sent to the Division to enhance efficiency.
This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at a mid-year stakeholders’ review of the performance of the Mfantseman Municipal Directorate of Education at Saltpond.
Mr Bannerman-Mensah noted that quality education does not depend only on the injection of resources, but also on an effective supervision.
“That is the more reason why GES is encouraging empowering School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), which are important agents of school supervision”, the Director General said.
Mr Bannerman-Mensah indicated that with the decentralization programme on course, greater responsibility was being placed on district directorates in the management of education and urged directors and their staff to live up to the task.
Miss Vivian Etroo, the Municipal Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the Education Quality for All (EQUALL), an agent of USAID, Danish Fund for International Development (DFID), United Nations children Fund (UNICEF), Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), Plan Ghana, World Vision Ghana, the Government and the Assembly for their contributions towards the improvement of education in the Municipality.
She said the interventions provided by the above stakeholders, had gone a long way to improve reading in the schools, particularly in the 28 schools being sponsored by EQUALL.
Miss Etroo said EQUALL had provided additional GH¢36,000 to build the capacity of teachers on reading skills in its sponsored schools.
She expressed concern about the use of public school teachers for national assignments and for sandwich courses and appealed that such national duties must coincide with the school calendar.
Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, Municipal Chief Executive commended donor partners for supporting education in the country.
He cautioned education authorities to ensure that funds provided by donor partners were judiciously utilized.
