University teachers across the country have started an indefinite strike but the government says the action is a breach of faith.
They are protesting government's failure to pay their research and responsibility allowances, which have been in arrears for the past one year.
They have called the strike despite government's announcement that some 12 Million Ghana Cedis have been released for the payment of their outstanding allowances.
After a meeting in Accra today, the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana decided to call the strike until funds are paid into the accounts of the association's members.
The President of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Asiedu-Addo told Joy News members of the association would not be deceived into calling off the strike.
According to him, the association had had experiences in the past when government show letters indicating that allowances due them will be paid and such money never got paid in time.
Dr. Asiedu-Addo said the teachers will continue to stay out of the classrooms until their allowances are lodged in the various accounts members of the association.
But the Deputy Education Minister, Dr. J.S. Annan said the stance of UTAG was a clear demonstration of a “failure of good faith.”
He said the leadership of UTAG had a very fruitful meeting with the Education Minister Wednesday and that signed letters were produced to the association authorizing the payments of the allowances to them.
Dr. Annan challenged UTAG to point out a situation when they were deceived by government.
He said the impatience of UTAG’s membership and the resort to the strike to cause public disruption was unjustified.
"We've done what we can, the money is being paid, so it is up to them to [soften] their stance and get back to the lecture halls because it is important that they teach," he stated.
