A few Ghanaians who were stubbornly insisting less than a week ago that we had nothing to celebrate after 50 years of independence must be having second thoughts now.
Radio and TV coverage of the return home of BUSUMURU KOFI ANNAN was so genuinely enthusiastic and vibrant that everyone listening or watching was caught up in the excitement of that moment.
As radio and TV commentators made up their minds about which airline, British Airways or Alitalia, had brought the ANNANS, (it turned out to be Alitalia) and some had difficulty saying Mrs. Annan’s name, everyone agreed that Kofi Annan’s return home after his very successful ten year tenure of office as Secretary-General of the United Nations has put a smile on our faces and given us a reason for prolonged celebration.
METRO TV’S GOOD EVENING, GHANA, broadcast about the same time as Kofi Annan’s arrival, captured the spirit of the event beautifully with former ambassador, VICTOR GBEHO, an old friend of Kofi Annan’s and MR. KWESI QUARTEY of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as CHARLES SAM’S guests.
It was gratifying to hear them speak from their first hand experience of the process by which Mr. Kofi Annan was selected as UN Secretary-General in the first place. Mr. Kwesi Ouartey called Kofi Annan "the very best advertisement for African excellence" and Victor Gbeho’s final words, worth recording for posterity, were: "Kofi Annan, like a general returning home in victory, deserves every laurel, and is role model."
GTV’s coverage of the inaugural speech of the Jubilee Lectures was very clear and professional.
Young NANA ODEI AMPOFO’S eulogy before Busumuru’s speech was most impressive, moving and, at times, whimsical and was well received by the audience, but most impressive of all was the speech itself. It was succinct, witty thoughtful and brilliantly delivered with charm and that quiet strength which is Kofi Annan’s style.
OPANYIN AGYEKUM speaking on PEACE FM’S KOKORIOKOO cautioned the media against affixing political party labels to Mr. Annan, Charles Sam echoed this on GOOD EVENING, GHANA and all men of goodwill say in unison "Let the Annans have their space."
A welcome contribution from METRO TV is the special report THEN AND NOW in its news bulletins. I have so far heard newsreader SHIRLEY QUARTEY in a report on Makola Market and a new voice, SAMUEL AGYEMANG on the GHANA POLICE.
There were some revealing old pictures and even a recording of the first Ghanaian Inspector General of Police, Mr. Madjitey.
If TV3’s recent report on the deplorable state of the Department of National Archives is the norm, then the police are to be doubly congratulated on their keeping of records.
According to an announcement on TV3, TIMELESS, that greatly addictive series from The Philippines ends on January 26. Since the last episode ended with two gentlemen fighting for Arabella at the orders of the rebels who had captured them, it seemed unlikely that that would happen.
All things are possible on TV3, we know, but it would be terrible if half the population of Ghana spent the rest of the year biting their nails in frustration.
I see AKUSHIKA ACQUAYE is back on GTV, Akwaaba!
Still missing is KWAMENA SACKEY of TV AFRICA. He was last seen asking a question after the eclipse. Ominous!!
