THE VICE President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama has tasked the Ghanaian movie industry to come out with innovative movies that would showcase African culture.
Such a move, he said, would move the industry to a higher pedestal.
He threw the challenge when a first rate Ghanaian actress, Jacqueline Appiah, in a delegation, called on him at the Castle, Osu to present the award she won at the just-ended “Africa Movie Academy Award” held in Nigeria.
Jacquine won the best actress in supporting role from the movie, ‘Beyonce, The President’s Daughter’.
Alhaji Mahama commended Miss Appiah for the honour she had brought her family, the industry and Ghana as a whole, saying it should serve as a challenge and inspiration to the youth to work hard to achieve such feats.
“This is a patriotic gesture; we are proud of you. Ghana is grateful.”
In the Vice President’s observation, pioneers in the film industry were doing so much to unearth the talent of the youth in the country, and pledged Government’s determination to support the industry to grow from strength to strength.
Mr. Kofi Adjololo, an ace actor, who led the 10-member delegation to the Castle, described the award as prestigious, explaining that Miss Appiah won the award as a result of her remarkable skills and professionalism.
According to him, for some time now, the industry had been criticized; but in the past few years, with the entry of some professionals, the industry had moved to a different level.
He therefore pledged their readiness to put in much effort to make Ghana proud as well as move the industry forward.
Sharing her mood at the awards ceremony, she said when her name was announced as the winner, tears filled her eyes as she walked on stage to receive her award.
“One thing that came to mind was to dedicate this award to Ghana as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary,” she stressed. She made a passionate appeal to Government to support the industry to grow.
In attendance were Pascaline Edwards, Vivian Arthur, Kasoum Sinare Baffoe, and Theo Akatuba among others.
