Whatever you choose to call him, be it the soul winner, WyClef’s replica, lyrical sniper, is entirely your sole cross to bear. However, lyrical don Sugar Ranking knows one thing for sure: he is back to take his kingly authority, crown orb and scepter as Ghana’s premier King of Dancehall with his second album “Kumiwaa”.
One would not want to describe Sugar Ranking (Perrygrino Nelson) as a new kid on the block since his debut album titled “A Call From The Street” which featured ace European singer Chana became very popular on the airwaves. But he is not throwing away “A Call From The Street” in the garbage after a year. “After all, I never launched it officially,” he shrugged.
Like a recycling plant, Sugar Ranking has fused his debut with new tracks and the product is what he calls, “Kumiwaa”, his second album. Sugar, who started serious music in 1996, proves he is indeed a versatile musician since his album cuts across all music genres.
Already, his “Prayer To The Lord” track is being used by some top radio stations to start the day on a good note. The Takoradi Polytechnic graduate says he is cool with that albeit he has not officially launched it.
There is also a good danceable tune on the album titled “Sika” which is bound for the global market if given the necessary push. And who says only the French are capable of real, good Francophone music.
Here, Sugar Ranking does perfectly well with the track “Santanaawa”, a blend of local hi-life and francophone rhythms.
Sugar Ranking explains his long absence from the music scene was a studying period for him. He may not like to blow his own horn, but he says most of the big hip-life gurus worshipped today were trained by him.
Guess the old adage is true after all: No one credits the tree which bears good, sweet fruits people love and praise so much.
When the question of why most Ghanaian artistes fail to get good international recognition popped up, he grinned broadly, “They just lack the right guys to manage their affairs.
What I need now is an innovative, goal-driven manager who I can work with”. He mentioned Mr. Asante, Jon Gemain and Francis of Metro TV, Verus and Gnash Dogg as the men behind him. Sugar Ranking is aiming at waging a campaign for street kids with his track “A Call From The Street”.
This is going to happen soon, he assures fans, perhaps after honoring invitations to perform in Denmark, Sweden and the New York.
Sugar expressed disappointment is one very hip-life guru who keeps on “stealing” his intellectual property and innovations in one of his tracks and it goes thus:
“You’ve been doing what I do .... You’ve been saying what I say….”
As to whom he is snapping at……… ssshhh!....details later.
