The only country singer in the ‘Stars of the future’ galaxy has been evicted: Daniel the hat man. We won’t be seeing any more hats from him again. What a shame?
But he wasn’t missed when the contestants lined up for their sixth week performances. The night started with the performances singing a tune recently composed by one of the competition’s judges, Zapp Mallet.
The song, titled ‘Malaria’ is meant to draw attention to one of the most devastating diseases the country is grappling with. The last seven contestants in the competition will sing and record it (with Zapp producing) and proceeds from its sale will go to a charity of the contestants’ choice.
As if to test how the song will fare on the market, the contestants came on stage singing it with Betty leading the pack. Then she started off the competition itself with her own unique rendition of Toni Braxton’s ‘Unbreak my heart’.
The low ends were however a bit difficult for her to work around. Commenting on her performance, Nana wanted her to “have more eye contact with the crowd” and Bibie was not all about the voice anymore. She wants her to be more interactive with the crowd. Zapp found the key too low for her. After Betty, Frederica crooned the crowd with ‘Weakness in me’ originally performed by Keisha White.
It moved people so much that she got a flower and some new GHC notes from some guys in the crowd. For the first time, she made Zapp Mallet listen to the lyrics and enjoy the song. Bibie saw what she “wanted to see”. And even if Nana King did not give her a ‘kpoi!’ the audience went right ahead.
Noble went for John Legends ‘Used to love you’. It was a bit on the shaky side. Zapp thought he could “have kept up the energy a bit longer.” But for Nana King, it was the best performance yet.
That was short-lived until Twum Barima did ‘All my love by K-Ci and Jojo. He carried so much emotion with the song that it triggered the fire alarm. Host Jessica said he was “so hot he turned on the smoke alarm.” Needless to say, all judges loved it. Zapp found him very innovative. Twum went off with a warning on his diction from Bibie.
Sandra’s version of Beyonce’s ‘Irreplacbale’ wasn’t too grand. It was a good effort, but only Beyonce can sing like Beyonce that’s why Zapp Mallet wanted her to be more original. Bibie said it was “not happening for me” and Nana King noticed her voice was cracking in between notes.
Up next was Justice doing ‘It's not that easy’ by Lemar. It might have proved easier than he thought because Bibie said ‘You’re IT, today’. Zapp told him he was ‘living the legacy of true crooners’. Clare took the last spot that night with ‘Try it on my own’ by Whitney Houston. She may have done it on her own but maybe her shouting took out the soothing aspect of the song.
Bibie was clearly not having it and her comments came off a bit strong. She felt that Clare was not putting in her maximum effort. Zapp and Nana King echoed their comments and that ended it for the night. We’ll see who gets to go home next.
