The Sunshine Theatre Company from Virgin Islands in the United States will on Wednesday August 1 present Queen Coziah, a historical docu-drama at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Accra.

The production, which is being organised under the auspices of the Centre for National Culture and the Noyam African Dance Institute, would as well feature musicians and dancers from the National Dance Company and Noyam.

Queen Coziah, which is choreographed by the Ghanaian dance guru, F. Nii Yartey and Monty Thompson, an acclaimed choreographer from the Virgin Islands, is an adaption of a historical book written by American scholar Dr. Eddie Donahue.

Directed by Felix Flemming, Queen Coziah, which would be interspersed with loud and subtle Ghanaian drumming, reveals part of the story of Africans in the Virgin Islands.

Indeed, it is history that is shared by Africans throughout the Carribean and Central America.

Through a dramatic fusion of bodies, music and voices, Queen Coziah would further take the audience through various aspects of the liberation struggle and exploitations that characterised the lives of coal-carriers on the Island.

Queen Coziah is highly relevant to modern times as massive takeovers of average and medium sized corporations by giant multi-nationals take place all over the world. Present day economic difficulties are also mirrored by past experiences on the Island.

"It is really wonderful for us to be here during the 50th independence anniversary celebrations of Ghana. Most of the slaves who ended up on the US Virgin Islands were from Ghana, thus we have a lot of similarities.

I remember when the struggle for liberation in Africa begun and I am glad to be part of this celebration," said director Felix Flemming.

"We are supporting this production because it is our duty to promote the arts in Ghana.

In this particular case, there are striking resemblances between the US Virgin Islands and Ghana - and it would be prudent to expose this to Ghanaians from all walks of life," added Alex Sefah Twerefour, Director of CNC.

The programme, which would be repeated at the same venue on Thursday August 2, is being sponsored by Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.
