Between the National Media Commission (NMC) and the blossoming Accra-based Citi FM radio station, something has happened to one of the most erotic programmes on radio, “Sex In The Citi.”

What has happened to this adult programme and why, is not known. While some addicts in the programme’s curious public allude to a recent refrain from the NMC, producers of the programme claim it had been their own earlier decision to hold it back for a review.

Citi FM authorities explained that the programme had already been withdrawn before the NMC issued that scathing statement which indicted the station and other media houses for excessive pornography.

In its statement, the NMC bemoaned the spate of graphic representation of pornographic materials published and aired by the Exciting Ebony and The Enquirer newspapers and the Citi FM and Hot FM radio stations.

The commission was of the view that the various materials that were published by the media houses were obscene and vulgar and insulted the sensibilities of the reading and listening public, especially the youth and children of the country.

“They were subsequently advised to repackage their messages and choice of words to conform with the ideals that will be acceptable to all, bearing in mind the ethics of the GJA and the commission’s National Media Policy.”

The statement said the representative of Citi FM agreed to have a second look at the programme in question and had it repackaged while the head of news of Hot FM apologised to the Commission for the broadcast of that particular news item perceived to be in bad taste.

Sex In The Citi was hosted by probably the most alluring voice on radio in Ghana today, Jessica Opare-Saforo. It was on air on Mondays from 9.00 pm to 10.00pm. and entailed an initial discussion on a sex-related topic between the hostess and resource persons who were usually not more than three.

The phone lines were then activated for questions and suggestions from listeners. Commenting on the programme in an Accra-based weekly journal late last year, Jessica said:

“ I’m not a sex therapist. I just ask questions which I think people would want answers to and I get resource people to discuss them. The rest is just sex theories the public debates. Some of the things people want to discuss are very innocent, for want of a better word. But that’s how handicapped some people are and Sex in the Citi helps them to deal with their situations.”

The very last edition in July dealt with using the breast to enhance the sexual experience. With that, the producer and presenter of Sex In The Citi on Monday nights on Citi FM thought they had successfully concluded and put away a pack of programmes that had generally allowed the public to air some very candid views on sex.

A month later, management of the station was wincing at the statement from the NMC.

The acting Programmes Manager of Citi FM, Nii Amah Dagadu told Showbiz they were not amused about the NMC statement especially when the programme was already off air and when a team from the station had met officials of the NMC to talk about the issue.

“It was a cordial meeting and we were done within 15 minutes. The NMC had called us, as partners in the industry, to say they had received some complaints in relation to Sex In The Citi which they wanted to draw our attention to and also talk about how we could improve the quality of the programme,” Nii Amah said.

“They were not able to tell us exactly what was wrong with the programme since according to them, they themselves had not listened to it. They, however, said that a monitoring team they had put in place had done so and had reported back that some editions of the programme contained materials that were not wholesome by the NMC’s standards.”

According to Nii Amah no caution was issued to Citi FM as the statement sought to indicate. “We were also not happy that nearly every other media house had received copies of the statement ahead of us and had started interpreting it in all manner of ways. We were extremely surprised at the NMC action and the tone of its statement. We thought it was too harsh because of the mood with which we left the meeting.”

Commenting on why Citi FM would not publicly state its views on the NMC statement, Nii Amah said the station did not want to get into any form of exchanges with the media regulatory body.
