Ghana’s representative in the Big Brother Africa II reality show is quite a character! The man has a larger than life personality and his charisma seems to hold most of his fellow housemates spellbound, especially the ladies!
From the very first day most of the girls made the fact that they were attracted to him an open secret. At first, it looked as if he had formed a connection with South African rep, Lerato, the two bonding because of their love for music and entertainment.
But Namibian Meryl wasted no time in setting out to charm Kwaku, flaunting her curves and displaying her talent in acrobatics.
Kwaku was quick to take note of her many “gifts”, and the two soon became the BBA II premier couple, closer than two peas in a pod.
Fans noticed how they made a lovely pair, with Meryl cooking for Kwaku and cleaning up after him.
She even used to fold his socks! Alas, Meryl was surprisingly voted out and Zimbabwean lawyer Bertha, who had previously confessed her “love” for Kwaku, saw a window of opportunity.
In what can only be described as a hostile takeover, Bertha took advantage of an emotionally vulnerable Kwaku, who was still reeling over Meryl’s eviction.
Bertha soon planted a wet kiss on Kwaku and asked him to sleep in her bed (with her) one night when Kwaku was on a drinking binge.
The two kissed and caressed a bit before Kwaku, thankfully, fell asleep. Many people questioned why Kwaku should have a fling with Bertha when he was romantically involved with Meryl? He even shed tears when she left, and the whole of Africa wept with him.
Kwaku has always stated that he does not have a steady girlfriend on the outside world. Code (from Malawi) says he has a girl back home, yet he seems to be in a serious relationship with Maureen (of Uganda).
Viewers have nicknamed the pair “Codeen”. Max (from Zambia) also confessed to having a lady on the outside world, but he has now fallen into Lerato’s arms. “Maxerato” is the only couple that has officially had sex in the BBA II house.
However, last Sunday saw Max leave the house, after the whole Africa except his home country voted him out.
Then there is “Richiana”; Richard (from Tanzania) is the married housemate who seems to be in an imitate affair with Tatiana (from Angola). That Africa voted out young, free-spirited Meryl, rather than cheating, short tempered, possessive Richard, is beyond belief.
At least Ghana agrees with me, judging from the polls. Fans of Richiana keep saying it’s just a game, but I beg to differ. Watching those two snog each other constantly can’t be healthy for his marriage, or viewers’ perception of the concept of holy matrimony.
Housemates seem to think that it’s all about having relationships in the house because of the viewers’ demand for ‘action’, but I say ‘Temptation Island’ is another show.
So Kwaku Tutu seems to be in his element. He once explained that his family and friends feared that two things could hinder his progress once he entered the house: women and alcohol. My word, isn’t that the truth!
Viewers of BBA II are always looking for a reason to criticize housemates. If you read the SMS strap line, you would be amazed at some of the insults hurled at the housemates (and at the levels of ignorance).
Whether it’s Lerato’s body, or Maureen’s obsessions, when there’s a flaw in a housemate, viewers are all too happy to point it out.
With Kwaku, viewers blasted his American accent and mannerisms, calling him fake and nothing like a true African. So what does a true African sound like? Djimon Housou in the movie “Amistad”, shouting, “GEEV US FREE”? Is English even an African language?
Listening to Kwaku talk, it’s clear that he is one of the most educated housemates. His English is fluent and his speech carefully articulated.
His “foreign” accent is evidently not locally acquired, as he did spend a lot of his life in the US. His Mom and Dad are both educationalists and Kwaku is a product of Ghana International School (GIS).
He speaks fluent Twi and his broken English is that of a “proper” Ghanaian.
True, he does go over the top sometimes with his Hip-Hop persona, but many viewers don’t realize that is exactly what he is - Ghana’s biggest underground Hip-Hop artist. Many might remember him from his days in “Talking Drums”.
The duo performed at Panafest ’94 and also shared the stage with legendary rap group Public Enemy when they came to Ghana in the mid-nineties.
As a solo artiste, he has done numerous collaborations with established superstars like Reggie Rockstone, 2Face Idibia and P-Square of Nigeria, and with international superstars Akon, Beanie Man and Buju Banton.
Viewers that doubt his authenticity should realize he’s even cooler than he claims to be.
The sad thing is that I don’t see enough support for Kwaku on the SMS strap line (short code 15626). Meanwhile, the rest of Africa are supporting their own and criticizing ours.
The clock’s ticking and the housemates are dropping like flies. The recent paranoia-inducing divisions in the house promise to bring many more unpredictable consequences.
One can only watch and wait to see if our Ghanaian representative will be the last man standing, and $100,000 richer. Stay blessed.
