A new African social reality television show, ‘Imagine Africa’ is set to hit the screen on Ghana Television starting this October.

It will be shown simultaneously in 49 broadcast stations across Africa and viewed by 200 million people.

The show comprises 12 contestants from 12 African countries who have been grouped into three groups, each consisting of four contestants.

The contestants are from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Cameroon, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Uganda and two from South Africa.

The 12 finalists were gotten after the Central Committee members interviewed 18 contestants from the contesting counties in South Africa after they had emerged winners in their various countries.

The series emphasises on finding practical solutions to the problems of HIV/AIDS, poverty, teenage pregnancy, under development and multiple partnership among others in the continent of Africa.

The 24 minute series, which is being put together by the African Broadcast Media Partnership against AIDS (ABMP), in collaboration with Kaiser Foundation based in Washington DC aims at tackling the above problems which confront the African youth.

Currently, one of the three groups is in the country filming their production. The same group had earlier filmed in South Africa.

The two other groups are filming their series in Rwanda and Mozambique.

Because of the idea of encouraging the youth in Africa to familiarise themselves with the continent, no contestant is allowed to contest in his or her country of origin.

To also foster the power of unity, the contest is among groups not individuals so that eventually, a group will win the ultimate.

The Series Director, Micky Madoda Dube explained that the series, which will run in 13 episodes is part of an African wide AIDS campaign.

"The idea is that if all these broadcast stations gear their energies towards a common vision, where all speak with one voice, and pull resources together and share experiences on HIV/AIDS while dedicating certain space of broadcast time towards showing issues of HIV/AIDS and engage with people in a more constant basis, people will definitely feel part of the programme,’ he said.

‘It is amazing that 12 youth from 12 different African countries came together to compete and come up with a solution to challenges that confront the youth in Africa on a day to day basis," he added.
