It is about time event organizers recognize the indelible importance of the media in their operations. Even though most of these organizers know what to do for the media before, during and after their event they ignore the press and do things very unprofessional.

The few of them who know nothing or very little about the role the media plays in what they do, refuse to learn. There is more to be done in the media even after event organizers have paid for publicity at various print and electronic media houses.

They write tens of invitation letters to several media houses humbly inviting them to attend the launch of the events when they need the media to do different write up or give them space or airtime to send the message down to the people at the time their event is unpopular. It beholds on the media to follow up every event they report on and lets its readers, listener or viewers have full results of what happened after events.

But organizers in Ghana do not make things go as smooth as it seems. The management of the image of an event does only reside in "paid-for" publicity campaigns but how the media reports the event. Having the financial wherewithal is not necessarily a sure guarantee to building the right image for your event in the media.

There has been disappointing developments lately, on the part of event organizers issuing press passes or accreditations in a timely and transparent manner. Most press houses are treated with utter disrespect when they go for accreditation to attend and report events to the public. Aside this, event organizer also refuse to prepare a designated sitting place for the media at their events and leave reporters stranded because “he or she didn't pay for a sit”.

Pressmen must be given the respect due them, since they only contribute to the program in terms of publicity. Weekly Fylla's experience on this matter has shown without doubts that the press is either seen as a parasite or those who will be at the event's venue to watch and go to bed like any other fan or member of the audience. Far from that, the press has always attended such events to write or communicate the full picture to the public. We don't have to lobby to be given press accreditation.

The press must be seen as the writers of entertainment history and not as those who will only come in to as it were cut profit to be made after the event. The entertainment industry in Ghana cannot be lifted from this crippled stage to a higher pedestal if those supposed to work together to ensure this, are disrespectfully disunited in purpose and deeds.

Favoritism, nepotism and "To whom you know" has taken centre stage thus the media houses, these event organizers can manipulate are the same media houses who have regular easy access to something that is supposed to be there for every media outfit. This only makes some of us feel like fish out of water. We must be up and doing and stop the hypocrisy. Do not hesitate in endorsing media houses because you are bound to meet those same people you met on your way up when you are on your way down.
