If you love live band music, then mark out the last Friday of every month on your calendar to make a date with Highlife Rendezvous at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel.
Walking into the hotel premises, one can immediately tell there is excitement in the air; the flashing lights, sweet aroma of the barbeques still on the grill among other things set the tone for a night of good music from popular highlife artistes.
Highlife Rendezvous is an evening of live band music meant to promote and preserve the culture of highlife, folkloric music and dance in Ghana as well as to reawaken live band performances. Organized by Citi FM, the event comes off on the last Friday of every month at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel and features a different highlife great every time.
The audience, most of whom were present at earlier editions of the Highlife Rendezvous were full of expectation for an enchanting performance from Nana Tuffour who was the artiste on the bill for last Friday.
With the Tontonsasa Band in excellent form, Nana Tuffour’s performance was equally good, forcing the audience onto their dancing feet.
Smartly dressed in an all-white attire, Nana Tuffour serenaded the audience with hit after hit from his past and recent albums.
The audience, mainly made up of corporate executives, did not only enjoy the good music but also got the opportunity to socialize with all 22 finalists of this year’s Miss Ghana pageant.
At exactly 8.00pm the Tontonsasa Band struck the first note dishing out some classic highlife tunes from such highlife greats as Amakye Dede, C.K. Mann and others. At 8:30pm the MC, Sammy Forson halted proceedings to invite the man of the evening, Nana Tuffour to take centre-stage.
He emerged from behind the audience shaking hands with fans as he walked to the stage singing the hit song “Diana”.
Hit after hit he held the audience spellbound by the mastery with which he dished out the songs. When the Miss Ghana ladies took to the dancing floor fans were mesmerized by the dexterity with which they danced to highlife music.
Some patrons, in an interview, were full of praise for Citi FM in its efforts at reviving highlife and live band music.
The highlife superstar and proud recipient of the National Grand Medalist Award in 2006, in an interview after his performance, said having been off the scene for sometime he was excited to see his fans come out in their numbers to support the resuscitation of the waning popularity of highlife music.
According to Nii Armah Dagadu, Events & Communications Manager of Citi FM, “By featuring renowned highlife musicians we aim not only at reawakening the art of live band performances but inspiring the younger generation. Highlife Rendezvous is a perfect hangout for people who want to enjoy great music, dance and meet people.”
Don’t miss the next edition of Highlife Rendezvous scheduled for August 29 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel.
