In spite of the political upheavals which started in the country with a coup on February 24, 1966 to topple first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah and subsequent ones which followed to derail our democratic march, Ghana has been able to stand together as a nation.

And for more than 14 years now, the country has been able to reverse the trend of undemocratic rule to wear its democratic gown without any hitch. So far, two political parties have had the opportunity to steer the affairs of the state.

It therefore calls for celebration as the country begins to mark its Golden Jubilee from this month. It is an anniversary which no Ghanaian must be left out.

Ghana is no doubt the envy of most countries especially in Africa as it has been acknowledged as a haven of peace and good governance. Many people from outside our boarders from this month will therefore throng the country to participate in the numerous programmes lined up for the celebration. The aim of most of them will be to get a first hand information about what they have heard about the country from other sources.

And, it is here that we appeal to our various assemblies to help keep a clean environment and also ask the citizens to exhibit the excellent hospitality that they are noted for.

Launching the Golden Jubilee celebration as part of his New Year message, President John Agyekum Kufuor was emphatic that the celebration will start this month under the auspices of the German Head of State, President Horst Kohler with a programme dubbed, "Partnership with Africa Initiative". This, he explained will target the youth and will be held in Accra.

We should also take advantage of the huge opportunity which this anniversary spanning a period of 12 months brings to the nation. Players in tourism, commerce and business should not let this chance slip through their hands. They should showcase their strength to the world and make the best out of it.

We should allow this Golden Jubilee celebration to unite us to share a common vision and move with confidence in pursuit of our common agenda for the development of our nation.

Again, we should also make a conscious effort to mind our utterances to avert conflict in this period in which the world’s attention will be on us.

Thankfully, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen. J. B. Danquah has called on personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces to be vigilant and collaborate with other security agencies to ensure incident free 50th anniversary celebration.

We trust the capabilities of our security agencies to deal with the situation but we also believe that it is the desire of all Ghanaians that our 12 months Golden Jubilee celebration will end successfully.
