Successful Conference

We congratulate the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on a successful National Annual Delegates’ Conference, at Koforidua, over the weekend

Although President Kufuor decried the large number of presidential aspirants and some foot soldiers of the party complained they were neglected after the party won the elections, the conference was generally successful.

The President’s observation was right, and the foot soldiers’ complaints were genuine, but whatever might be the grudge of individuals and groups, it could be ironed out when there is unity within the party.

The conference, coming on the heels of a similar successful one organised by the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is indicative of the progress the country would be making in the area of good governance.

Those successes, coming at the beginning of the country’s Golden Jubilee year, are good omen for Ghanaians and indeed, a challenge for democracy.

It is an opportunity to nurture our fledging democracy to bear good fruits for all Ghanaians.

At this time, there should not be any occasion to go back to the past “dark days”, when a few disgruntled people relied on the barrel of the gun to force themselves on the people.

It is now the inalienable right of Ghanaians to decide who should rule them. The ballot box must be the only means through which the president or any other political leader is chosen, as it is well-known in all parts of the civilised world.

The successes recorded at the two congresses are not ends in themselves; rather, they are means to an end.

Both the government and all the opposition groups must co-operate and fine-tune the right type of governance in the country.

This is the time for people belonging to different political groups to sink their selfish parochial ambitions and support a just cause, which could lift the country from the low level at which it is now to prominence and progress.

It is more honourable to temporarily sink one’s political rights for the general good of one’s nation, than tenaciously holding on to those rights which would lead that country to its doom.

The individual political parties could maintain their individual political identities all right, but when it comes to occasions where the image of the country is at stake, those fragmented interests must be abandoned for total national cohesion.

This rare spirit of patriotism was demonstrated during last year’s World Cup tournament in Germany whenever the Black Stars had an encounter with other teams.

With one voice, one purpose and support, the people encouraged the players to give of their best. Perhaps, that was the secret behind the success of the stars in the tournament.

The flame that was kindled in Germany must not die. Ghanaians need even more than that unity now to forge ahead and achieve more successes for mother Ghana.

The year has begun with glimpses of success; it is incumbent on the people to put in more and achieve far more than envisaged from the beginning.

Daily Guide therefore calls on the rank and file of members of NPP to bury the hatchet and move in unity for another resounding victory, next year.
