I am sure you have already heard what transpired at this year’s National Sports Journalists Awards and so I am not here to tell you about it.
What I really want to do is to commend the winners of the radio and television award categories. Metro TV emerged once again as the Best Sports Station for television.
I must say that I didn’t have an iota of doubt that this award would go to Metro TV because of how the station has positioned itself in the area of sports broadcasting. They enhanced their posture over the period with the coverage of the CAN 2006 and Germany 2006 tournaments.
The station also added Christopher Opoku to an already crack sports team comprising Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Prince Annan and Mohammed Amin Lamptey. This team and those on the flipside of things continue to make television sports viewing a lot more interesting and so they do deserve the award.
The competition, for me, was in the radio arena and it was won, yet again, by Happy FM. Do I have anything to say about this? Yes! I think that the guys at Happy FM have a lot of rumour-mongering in the sports circuit and they play it up a whole lot.
Most of the times the depth, in my view, is suspect and you cannot but wonder if they could not do a bit more refining before pushing news to the public.
But hey, as far as popularity is concerned the station’s sports has it all and picking this award twice means they know which button to press to get the results hence one cannot fault the public and the committee in presenting the station with this award. Remember it comes with a Cherry QQ saloon car. No kidding!
I cannot claim to have listened to all local language football commentators or the English commentators but I can say that the choice of Acostic of Hello FM and George Lartey of GBC as the best in 2006 cannot be bad choices. They deserve them.
May I add that in the mass market where sports is loud and defies a lot of decorum and standards, Davies Odeneho-Appiah has proven to be more level-headed than many and so I think that he deserves to be commended for emerging as Best Radio Sports Presenter.
I must commend the organisers Media Trust, especially the brains behind the concept namely Fiifi Banson and Patrice Amegashie (graduates of the Radio Gold academy) for starting this thing and maintaining it in spite of the challenges.
I am told this year’s event was a well improved one on the previous two. Congratulations all round.
“SPACE FM” IS BEST RADIO STATION Sunyani based Space FM was last Friday adjudged the overall best radio station in the Brong Ahafo Region. This was announced during an award ceremony held at Sunyani for media organisations and personalities from and in the Brong Ahafo Region. Information that got to me from Sunyani had it that along with this award Space FM, operated by Global Media Partners, swept most of the awards in the radio categories at this maiden awards ceremony. Out of the twenty-one awards available in all categories Space FM won five. The other four awards are the best sports presenter (Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya), best sports programme (Space Super Sports), best arts and entertainment presenter (the presenter of Space Ecstasy, Danny Glover) and best morning show presenter (NanaKas). The best morning show went to Sky FM and over all best media practitioner went to Kwabena Pra Jnr (Dondada), of Nananom FM, Goaso. The awards was organised by Doorstep Ventures, in collaboration with the Brong Ahafo Chapter of Ghana Journalist Association and the regional planning committee of Ghana @ 50 Secretariat. Congratulations all round again! doku342@yahoo.com
