The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Apostles, Sekondi, last weekend made a Special donation to the Central Prisons, in Sekondi.
The items which is worth ¢20 million included food items, toiletries, provisions, used clothing, drugs and an electronic organ.
Presenting the items, the Rector of Saints Peter and Paul, Very Rev. Dr. Jacob Augustine Welbourne, said the prison ministry was one of the church’s core programmes and our visit was the very beginning of the church’s religiously with the ministry," he said.
The programme, Very Rev. Dr. Welbourne said was the brain child of the Good Shepherd Fellowship with the support of the rest of the parishioners.
He said that people in the prison have had varied experiences in life with different ages and it was unfortunate that they were in jail. "But one thing they all have in common is the unbearable loneliness and the aching desire for friendship.
Companionship for incarcerated people is almost impossible especially those on death row who are even isolated from other inmate’s, the Rector said.
According to Very Rev. Dr. Welbourne, the prisoners have lost their friends, family and even their freedom and often too, their votes.
"Many who were married end up divorced and become single. Indeed they become completely alone," he observed.
It was his hope that these men and women would rejoin society and live a productive life.
Very Rev. Dr. Welbourne recounted his imprisonment and that of four others for contempt of court and said that "we as Christians were put on trial for our Christian values. We could have avoided prison by simply denying allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ."
