The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in the Brong Ahafo Region is quizzing officials of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU) for beating and detaining a 19-year old farmer who they claimed could not pay medical bills of an 18- year- old girl he had impregnated.

He was released after five days on enquiry bail after his family had paid ˘1 million and promised to pay the rest later.

After his release, the farmer bolted and the police went to arrest his mother who reported the conduct of the police to CHRAJ.

A CHRAJ official in the region, Mr. Ernest Ako confirming the story said in all the two cases, the police were wrong.

He did not understand why the police could act contrary to the laws of the land by arresting and detaining citizens. He said the fact that one person had flouted the laws did not mean the police should also use state powers to intimidate others.

He said it was wrong for the police to detain the farmer who they arrested on December 16, 2006 and released five days later.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Amoako, and Head of the DVVSU in Brong Ahafo Region, also confirmed knowledge of the incident.

He, however, said that he had not been informed of any beatings and detention of the farmer adding that the police would do their best to investigate in collaboration with the CHRAJ to bring the perpetrators to book.
