| Nkusukum Traditional Council prepares for Golden Jubilee |

The Nkusukum Traditional Council in the Central Region has outlined a number of activities for the celebration of Ghana's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Some of the activities include a durbar at Saltpond on February 9, clean-up exercises and a remembrance non-denominational church service for people of the area who played significant roles in the struggle for independence.
Explaining to newsmen why the Council was so much involved in the celebration of the jubilee, at a meeting of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Nana Ataapim Kweenu VIII, Mankrado of the Council described Saltpond as the "Mecca" of political parties that fought for independence.
Nana Ataapim Kweenu, who is also the Presiding Member of the Mfantseman District Assembly, noted that both the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) were formed at Saltpond.
He noted that a palm tree which was planted by Dr Kwame Nkrumah to signify the formation of the CPP and the "Convention House" where the UGCC was formed were being maintained as tourist attractions. Nana Baah VII, Nifahene and a member of the Planning Committee said Pieenyim at Saltpond Lower Town and the Hammond Hall where political meetings were held were to be renovated.
Nana Kwesi Brebo III Benkumhene and a member of the Committee appealed to "Ghana at 50" Secretariat to support the Council with funds to renovate these important historic landmarks. He also appealed to well-to-do citizens of the area to donate to help the council to make the celebration of the anniversary a memorable event.
Other members of the Planning Committee are Nana Kwa Bonko V, Ankobeahene and Mr Philip Patterson, Registrar of the Council.
