Although the body of one of the illegal miners who were trapped in an underground mine at Obuasi last Sunday has been sighted, it will not be possible to recover or carry out any further search.
Available information indicates that there may be another man missing in the same area.
The two are said to be part of a larger group unlawfully carrying out mining activities in the underground Cote D’lvoire section which is a worked-out area of the mine which is no longer being mined by the company.
A press release issued by management of Anglogold Ashanti, operators of the Obuasi mine, said they were informed anonymously of the accident in the early hours of Sunday evening apparently by one of the victim’s colleagues.
"Management immediately dispatched a rescue and recovery team, accompanied by police, to locate survivors but unfortunately they were able to sight only the body of one dead miner," the release said.
It said management has determined that the area is extremely unstable, and that any recovery attempt would in all likelihood result in serious injury or death of members of the recovery team.
"The company has therefore regretfully concluded that it will not be possible to recover the sighted body or carry out any further search," it added.
The management indicated that following a visit to the site during the afternoon of Friday, February 23, the Principal Inspector of Mines concurred with that conclusion.
It said in addition, the leadership of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, the Ghana Police, the National Disaster Management Organisation, the Bureau of National Investigations, the Ghana Mine Workers Union, the Senior Staff Association and a member of the family of the deceased all concluded during a visit to the site on February 22 that there cannot be further recovery exercise.
The release said a number of other miners unlawfully present in the area were arrested and are in police custody while the name of the deceased discovered will be disclosed in due course.
