A veteran politician in Kumasi, Opanin Kwame Afreh, has appealed to the government to pardon Mr Tsatu Tsikata, former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and also free the former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of all charges currently pending against her in the court.

This, he noted would give real meaning to the process of reconciliation the President set in motion on assumption of office.

In a statement issued in Kumasi on Wednesday, Opanin Afreh said such a gesture would also help doused tension in the run-up to the general elections in December.

He said the government should learn from the traditional rulers and accept blames and shortcomings of predecessors and take corrective measures instead of being vindictive.

"It is time the government adopted a more humane way of dealing with corruption instead of being vindictive", he stated, and urged President Kufuor to ensure that Mrs Rawlings and Tsikata were freed of all charges in the true spirit of reconciliation.

He said in the same vain that the President pardoned Mr Dan Abodakpi, MP for Keta, it would not be out of place if he used his prerogative powers to pardon the two currently being tried of various offences before the courts.

Opaning Afreh also commended Nana Akufo-Addo for selecting Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, as his running mate for the 2008 general elections.

He described Dr Bawumia as a valuable national asset, who would bring the much needed change on the political scene and attract votes of the youth.
