Though scientists have developed protocols using Gamma Irradiation Facilities for medicinal sterilization and food preservation, lack of funds was constraining the establishment of the facility which could generate revenue for the country.
Prof. Edward H.K. Akaho, Director, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) who made this known called on government to provide the Commission with funds to enable it operate the facility to support health care delivery and for export of agricultural products.
Prof. Akaho made the appeal when Professor Dominic Fobih, Minister of Education, Science and Sports paid a working visit to GAEC in Accra on Tuesday to interact with management and staff.
He said financial constraint was making it difficult for the Commission to transfer technology for the benefit of society.
He said there was also the need to put in place a National Nuclear Law that would be consistent with International conventions to ensure efficient application of nuclear technology and biotechnology for effective nuclear safety and security.
The GAEC Director also said the Commission in collaboration with the University of Ghana, Legon, had created a faculty for postgraduate School of Nuclear Allied Sciences to enhance human resource development in the discipline.
Prof. Fobih asked the workers to dedicate themselves to work and support the ministry to work for the good of the country and promised to support the GAEC School with 12 computers.
