The Ghana Nuclear Society has expressed doubt about government’s full commitment in addressing the issue of nuclear energy to complement the current energy supply.
Prof. John Justice Fletcher, President of the Society, told Joy News with the relaxed attitude of government, it is not possible for the country to benefit from nuclear energy by 2015 even with the abundance of sun – the required raw material.
The nuclear option was proposed at the height of the energy crisis that bedeviled the nation last year.
He is therefore calling on government to expedite action on its proposals.
“These proposals have not been addressed by Parliament the way they should. There are so many other things that the Parliament should be considering if it seriously wants nuclear energy after 2015.”
Prof. Fletcher urged the government to engage in an extensive consultation with stakeholders and interested groups like the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy, Felix Owusu Adjapong has assured that the government is still interested in the programme and is even working on plans to “shorten the process” of attaining nuclear energy.
He also reiterated the need for wide-ranging consultation for that purpose.
He noted that the government has already approved recommendations by a committee headed by Prof. Adzei Bekoe, Council of State Chairman which suggested that Ghana should be able to produce nuclear energy for consumption.
“The rest are going to be done by the technical committee.”
