| KNUST seeks possibility of using waste for fuel |

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has begun research into the possibility of generating bio fuel from waste materials in the country.
Results of the research, funded by the Zoomlion Waste Management Limited, a waste management company, are expected within the next six months.
The Public Relations Officer of Zoomlion, Mr Oscar Provencal, told the Daily Graphic that KNUST had started a pilot programme of generating bio fuel from waste in Kumasi.
He said the collaboration between KNUST and Zoomlion to conduct the research was an attempt to address the fuel issue in the country.
Mr Provencal said the expected energy generated from waste would also solve the problem of waste disposal, because many people would begin to value waste as a commodity.
He said the management of Zoomlion did not want to limit itself to only waste collection, and that it wanted to engage in using waste for profitable activities.
According to Mr Provencal, the current landfill sites were not adequate and it was also difficult acquiring land for that purpose, hence the need to find ways of channelling waste.
He stressed that no company could be efficient in the collection of waste if it had difficulty with dumping sites.
Therefore, he said, the management of Zoomlion was considering going into landfill management, and would soon consult with relevant authorities on how to acquire land for that activity.
