THE Ghana Tourist Board has commenced its annual law enforcement exercise.
The programme is targeted at tourism plants operating illegally in the country i.e. without the Ghana Tourist board’s operational licences.
The first phase of the pgramme will effect identified operators who have not registered their facilities with the Ghana Tourist Board. One hundred and two (102) establishments will be affected in the Greater Accra Region, three (3) in the Upper East Region and eight (8) in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The second phase of the programme will cover establishments which failed to meet minimum requirements for licensing after they had been re-inspected and are therefore unrecommended for licensing. Operators of all unrecommended establishments are expected to suspend operations voluntarily until they meet the minimum requirements for licensing.
Failure to suspend operations will compel the Ghana Tourist Board to physically close down all such establishments, because substandard facilities must not be allowed to operate.
Currently re-inspections are being carried out on all establishments who failed to qualify for licensing under Ghana Tourist Board’s main inspection programme and those who fail to qualify for the issuance of operational licensing under Ghana Tourist Board’s main inspection programme and those who fail to qualify for the issuance of operational licences will constitute the second batch i.e. the second phase.
The third phase of the enforcement programme will cover all establishments which have been issued with operational licences but have failed to collect their licences and display them at their various places of business.
The objective of these exercises is to ensure that operators comply with standards set for all accommodation and catering establishments for Ghana to remain internationally competitive as a preferred tourist destination in an environment where international standards need to be adhered to.
Operators who fall within any of these categories are therefore welcome at any of the Ghana Tourist Board’s offices to regularise their operations.
